Having Your Golf Cart Controller or Charger Repaired and Rebuilt to Save Money

When it comes to golf cart parts and accessories some of the most expensive repair items are the electronics.  Golf cart controllers and chargers do go bad from time to time.  Sometimes it is from a failure within the unit and sometimes it is human error that causes the damage.  Either way, replacing your E-Z-GO, Club Car, Yamaha, Bad Boy, Star, or other golf cart controller or charger can be very expensive.  Fortunately there are companies out there that will repair or rebuild your golf cart’s damaged controller or charger.

Golf cart controllers take the power from your golf cart’s battery pack and send the proper voltage and amperage to the motor based on your input using the throttle pedal.  Seems simple but there are many capacitors, diodes, and solid state electronics in golf cart controllers that make them very sensitive to power surges.  Any time you work on your golf cart’s electrical system or are installing electrical accessories it is very important to place the golf cart into tow mode to prevent “frying” your cart’s controller.  Just a single arc created connecting or disconnecting a battery in your golf cart can damage the controller.

When your golf cart will not go and you determine that your controller has failed you should always consider having the controller rebuilt.  Compare the price of having it rebuilt to the price of a brand new one.  You may be able to save a ton of money and get the same warranty either way.  A good example of this is the Danaher controllers that come on the E-Z-GO RXV carts.  A brand new one of these controllers can cost nearly $2,000.  At the time of writing this article you could have you Danaher golf cart controller repaired / rebuilt for under $600!  CLICK HERE to take a look at this service.  Many other golf cart controllers can be rebuilt for less than half the price of a replacement controller.  Generally, the only controllers that cannot be rebuilt / repaired are ones that have burned or been submerged in water (flood damage).  CLICK HERE to see if the controller on your golf cart is able to be rebuild and what it would cost to have it repaired.

Golf cart chargers are also damaged by voltage variations.  Generally not variations in your cart but rather in the AC power they are plugged into.  Lightning strikes are probably the most common way that a golf cart charger gets damaged.  These chargers can often be very expensive to replace and the original OEM chargers are sometimes difficult to find.  It is tempting to purchase a used golf cart controller but we have had bad experience with this.  We would much rather have our golf cart charger repaired / rebuilt than to buy a used one that you cannot be sure the history of.  Much like golf cart controllers, your charger rebuild usually comes with the same warranty that you would get with a new charger.  Recently companies that offer golf cart charger rebuild services are even rebuilding chargers for golf carts with lithium batteries.  It used to be that you could only have chargers for lead acid batteries repaired.  Charger rebuild services can even include replacing the DC cord that plugs into your golf cart or the AC cord that plugs into the wall.  CLICK HERE to take a look at some of the golf cart chargers that can be repaired / rebuilt.
